How does dictation work?
Medusa bundles a local Whisper runtime — mic capture, voice activity detection, and transcription all happen on your machine. No internet, no API keys, no cloud round-trip. Your draft never leaves your laptop.
Can I use my old screenplays?
Yes. Medusa imports .fdx (Final Draft XML), which is the industry's standard interchange format. Scene headings, character cues, transitions, shots, parentheticals, and act breaks all map correctly. Files round-trip cleanly between Medusa and older software.
Is there a subscription?
No. We're tired of seeing users exploited by forced subscription models. We can do better. A one-time purchase gets you the app and subsequent version updates. Buy once and use it for life.
What does the AI actually do?
It's screenplay-aware. It strips filler words (um, uh, you know), formats voiced punctuation (you say "comma," it writes ,) , and assigns the right element type — so when you say "interior detective's office, night," it becomes a scene heading and not a line of dialogue. We will continue to integrate intelligent tools thoughtfully, always in service of the writer.
What platforms is it on?
Medusa ships as a Windows desktop app today, with installer and portable builds. macOS support is on the roadmap.
Do I have to dictate?
Not at all. The keyboard editor is a first-class citizen with autocomplete, character hotkeys, and full ProseMirror editing. Dictation is just there when you need to think out loud.
